Quick Answer
If you're searching for how to write an SOP for an Australian student visa, start with one important fact: the visa itself doesn't use a long SOP. It uses short answers called the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Your university may still ask for a separate SOP.
This guide explains both in simple words, shows you what to write, and lists the mistakes that cause problems.
SOP or GS Answers: What's the Difference?
Many students mix these two up, so here is the simple version.
| University SOP | Visa GS answers | |
|---|---|---|
| Used for | Your admission application | Your student visa application |
| Where | Uploaded to the university | Typed into the online visa form |
| Length | Set by the university | Maximum 150 words per answer |
| Required? | Only if the university asks | Yes, for every applicant |
The Department of Home Affairs prefers you to answer the GS questions directly in the online form instead of attaching a separate statement. Always check the official Genuine Student requirement page before you apply, because rules can change.
What Does the Visa Form Ask?
The GS requirement replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test for applications made from 23 March 2024. Your answers must be in English.
In simple terms, the form asks about:
- Your current circumstances: your education, work, family and finances
- Your course and provider: why you chose this course at this university
- The benefit: how the course will help you
An extra question applies if you've held a student visa before or apply from inside Australia. Answer the questions exactly as the current form shows them, and add evidence where you can.
How to Write Strong Answers
1. Tell your story simply
Write about your studies, work or training so far. If you have a gap, explain it honestly. Mention a job, course or family reason, and keep it true.
2. Explain why this course
Name real features of the course, like specific subjects, projects or specialisations. Link them to what you've already studied or done. Avoid lines like “Australia has a good education system.” Everyone writes that.
3. Compare with India
If a similar course exists in India, say why you still chose Australia. Maybe the Australian course covers a skill in more depth. Show that you did your research.
4. Keep career goals realistic
Say what skills you want and the kind of work you'd like to do. Don't promise a job or salary you can't back up.
5. Match your documents
Your answers should agree with your marksheets, work letters, bank papers and CoE. If your story and your documents don't match, that's a problem. Home Affairs gives more weight to claims supported by evidence.
A Sample Answer Under 150 Words
This is an example only. Use your own facts, and never copy it.
Question: Why did you choose this course and provider?
“I finished my B.Tech in Computer Science in 2025 and now work as a junior data analyst at a logistics company in Noida. I use Excel and basic SQL, but I want to learn machine learning and advanced analytics. I chose the Master of Data Science at [University] because its units include machine learning and big data, and it ends with an industry project. I compared it with two Indian programmes, which offer fewer practical units in these areas. After finishing, I want to work in supply-chain analytics, where my current employer has an analytics team. My savings and my father's income cover my tuition and living costs, and I have attached the documents.”
That's about 115 words. Paste your own draft into a word counter before you submit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Copying samples or templates. Case officers see the same text again and again.
- Being vague. “I like this course” tells them nothing.
- Leaving gaps unexplained. Explain study or work gaps honestly.
- Making claims you can't prove. Every statement should match a document.
- Hiding past visa problems. Be honest about earlier refusals or cancellations.
- Using fancy English. Plain, clear sentences work best.
- Going over 150 words. The form won't accept more.
No special wording guarantees visa approval. The best answer is an honest one, backed by evidence.
- I've checked the course and university details
- My answers explain why this course and why Australia
- My career goals are realistic
- Every answer is within 150 words
- My answers match my documents
- I've read the latest instructions on the official website

How Australia Education Consultants in Noida Can Help
A good counsellor can help you pick a course that fits your background, explain what the form is asking, and review your draft for clarity and consistency. They can't write your answers for you, and they can't guarantee a visa. Only the Australian immigration authorities decide that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an SOP compulsory for an Australian student visa?
The visa uses the Genuine Student questions in the online form. A separate SOP is only needed if your university asks for one, so check both sets of instructions.
What is the word limit for GS answers?
Each answer can be up to 150 words. A university SOP may have a different limit.
Can I use a sample SOP?
Use samples to learn the structure, but write your own answers. Copied text can hurt your application.
Can I attach a separate statement instead?
Home Affairs prefers answers typed into the online form. Follow the current form instructions.
Can a consultant guarantee my visa?
No. A consultant can guide you through the process, but the final decision rests with the Australian immigration authorities.
